Greg Scarpa, a feared goodfellow and capo in the New York Mafia, was a ruthless killer who began a double life in 1962 when he became a paid FBI informant. His treachery led directly to the successful prosecution of the Colombo family leadership and precipitated the bloody Colombo war of the early 1990s. In 1993 his double life was finally exposed six months before he died in a prison hospital from full-blown AIDS.
